Premier League forced to issue fresh Newcastle United statement after Bruno Guimaraes decision

The Premier League has confirmed that Bruno Guimaraes’ goal was disallowed because of a ‘factual handball’ during Newcastle United’s win over Aston Villa.

The Brazilian thought he added the gloss on an important win for the Magpies late on, however it was adjudged that he handled the ball in the lead-up to the goal. Although the decision proved to be elementary with Joelinton scoring a third in stoppage time.

Anthony Gordon fired Eddie Howe’s side to the perfect start as he curled into the top corner past Emi Martinez inside 80 minutes. After half-an-hour there was a flashpoint as Jhon Duran was sent off for violent conduct after a coming together with Newcastle defender Fabian Schar.

Alexander Isak continued his fine form, scoring his 11th goal of the campaign on the hour mark. Newcastle were cruising into the Europa League places and thought they were coasting to three points and three goals when Ezri Konsa’s clearance cannoned off Bruno and into the back of the net.

However, the Premier League confirmed it was chalked off following the intervention of VAR. In a tweet they said: “The VAR recommended that the goal was disallowed for a factual handball by Guimarães.”

The Magpies moved to within four points of Arsenal, who occupy the final Champions League point ahead of their encounter with Ipswich Town on Friday. Dropped points from Bournemouth and Manchester City opened the door for Newcastle to leapfrog the two clubs as well as Unai Emery’s side.

Efforts from Gordon, Isak and Joelinton mean that Newcastle head into the new year unbeaten in four.
