A pub expert with a huge following on social media has named what he believes is Newcastle’s best sports bar and it might not be where you’d expect.
As a proud footballing city with a Premier League football playing right in heart of town, Newcastle is a place where a love for sport is second nature and, fortunately for lovers of all things footy, rugby, darts and everything in between, there are plenty of places to head to watch some big screen live action.
Whenever Newcastle or playing or for events like the Euros, World Cup or Six Nations, places like Bar 52, Shark Club, The Mayfair and The Old George are packed to the rafters, but it’s another place in the city centre that has earned high praise from Thomas Vosper, who has over 166,000 followers on Instagram alone for his Historic Pub Crawls account. Tom recently made a trip to Tyneside to do a pub crawl from Newcastle to Gateshead and one of the boozers he called in at was Bacchus.
A long standing firm favourites with Geordie drinkers, High Bridge pub Bacchus is somewhat tucked away from the busyness of Grey Street, the Bigg Market et al, but certainly made an impression on Tom, with him struck by its interior and its atmosphere. Asking ‘could this be Newcastle’s best sports bar?’ the drink expert remarked: “There’s something special about this huge bar that reminds me of the old sports bars in Manhattan with crowds crammed against the polished wood, staring at one of the many HD screens throughout this elaborate furnishing.
“This pub might be styled after a cruise ship, but it has so much space, across split levels that make is feel like the perfect place to prepare for the match or enjoy it here if you can’t get down to Wembley.”
Like anyone else who’s ever been to Bacchus, with much more of a traditional pub feel than some of its city sports bar rivals, Tom was also struck by the decor on the way to the toilets as he told his followers that was something that they definitely didn’t want to miss.
During his trip to Tyneside, Tom’s first port of call was The Centurion in Central Station, with him being blown away by the beauty of its famous ceiling.
