Public urged not to ‘disrupt search area’ as hunt for missing runner Jenny Hall enters fifth day

The search for missing County Durham runner Jenny Hall has entered its fifth day.

Durham Constabulary and mountain rescue teams from across the region remain in Hamsterley Forest. The forest remains open to visitors, but police urged the public yesterday not to join the search themselves as it could disturb their work and distract sniffer dogs.

Speaking from Hamsterley Forest, Chief Inspector Dean Haythornthwaite said: “So it’s day four now in the search for Jenny Hall and you’ll see that we have officers and colleagues out in Hamsterley Forest carrying on that search activity. I just want to say a huge thank you first of all to all the members of the public who have contacted us with information, we really do appreciate your help and support in this.

“I’m aware that we’re going to have families down in Hamsterley Forest today enjoying the facilities and my ask would just be this, if we could just allow those officers the space to carry out their search and try not to disrupt that search area if you do see people out and about involved in that activity. And if you do have any information please do give us a call, call control on 999 we really appreciate the help and support from the public so far.”

Ms Hall was last seen leaving her home in Barracks Farm on Tuesday, February 18 at around 3pm. She is described as white, six foot tall, and has long, dark hair which she may have had up in a ponytail.

She was last seen wearing a blue John Deere hoodie, dark jogging bottoms, and may have been carrying a green jacket. The 23-year-old’s red Ford Focus was found by near remote moorland on the B6278 between Eggleston and Stanhope on Thursday.

Searches have been concentrated around the running trails Jenny frequently uses between Eggleston and Hamsterley. More than 100 miles of track have already been covered in the Teesdale area, with specialised sniffer dogs being used in the area around Jenny’s last known location.

Police reported on Friday that searchers have faced “challenging weather conditions and terrain”. Digital intelligence officers have examined Ms Hall’s mobile phone, smartwatch and running apps, but have found no leads.

Durham Constabulary urged anyone with information to call 999.
