Queues expected at new Newcastle restaurant in free food giveaway

A new restaurant is set to cause a stir in Newcastle city centre – by giving away free food before it even officially opens.

City foodies were left shocked when Yo! Sushi closed its Grainger Street eaterie without warning last November – but surprise turned to delight when it emerged that Pho, an exciting Vietnamese restaurant chain which is already serving up steaming bowls of goodness in 45 other key towns and cities, was heading to the North East. Pho confirmed its plans to open a restaurant close to Monument towards the end of last year, pledging to serve up the tasty street food the Southest Asian nation is famed for.

The healthy Vietnamese street food restaurant group was originally launched by husband-and-wife duo Stephen and Juliette Wall in 2005, when they opened their first Pho in London after leaving their jobs, travelling the world and being inspired by Vietnam – especially the country’s national dish, pho.

Pho is described as being the soul of Vietnam, an aromatic, nutritious and delicious rice noodle soup which is eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and can tailored to suit the diner. It is served alongside plates of fresh herbs to add as you please. The dish is brimming with lean meats and fresh ingredients, making its the perfect comfort food, hangover cure or pick-me-up.

The restaurant also serves up sharing starters, spring rolls, spicy salads, wok-fried noodles, rice bowls, fragrant curries, Vietnamese beers, wines and fresh juices and cocktails including their signature Phojito, made with white rum, mint, lime and soda.

Vietnamese restaurant chain Pho is coming to Newcastle

Now the popular Vietnamese chain has told us its official opening date – and revealed it is holding a soft launch over three days, to give Newcastle foodies a chance to sample its food before throwing open its doors to the public. And on one upcoming Friday, the company will be serving free Pho all day from 12pm until it runs out.

Expect to see queues around the block on February 21, when the company says it will be give away free Pho to walk-in customers only who eat in – and they are expecting more than 500 people that day.

The company says it is also running a soft launch, planned from February 22 to 24, where all customers that sign up on its webpage will be invited to book in and receive 50% off food on those dates. The launch offer will only be made for bookings only, with very limited walk-in availability based on cancellations.

The restaurant’s official opening date will follow the soft launch weekend, on February 25.
