A former County Durham mining town has hit the headlines in recent weeks after it was named one of the ‘ugliest’ towns in the UK.
Stanley was ranked the seventh ugliest town in the country and was the only entry from the North East after it was ranked on shop fronts, historical architecture, low traffic, litter, views and greenery.
The article featured in the Telegraph’s travel by writer Helen Pickles who said the “landscape can’t makeup for the loss of its major economy.”
Some 1,250 locations up and down the country were ranked. Stanley, in County Durham, scored a lowly 28 out of 50 which placed it seventh in the country and the only entry from the North East.
It led to residents describing it as the ‘the forgotten town’. Despite the negative headlines there are reasons to love the mining town.
