Richard Osman shares insight into Gino D’Acampo scandal as shows pulled from schedules

Richard Osman has shared his thoughts on the Gino D’Acampo scandal, discussing why the celebrity chef’s programmes have been pulled from TV line-ups. The Pointless host delved into the topic during the latest episode of his podcast with journalist Marina Hyde, The Rest is Entertainment, questioning why it took so long for these accusations to emerge regarding the former This Morning star.

Gino D’Acampo, 48, faced allegations of “distressing” and “sexually inappropriate” conduct in an ITV News investigation last week, as a multitude of individuals brought forward claims of “unacceptable” and “horrendous” behaviour spanning over a dozen years.

Richard Osman, who has production credits including Deal or No Deal and Whose Line Is It Anyway on top of his presenting role, remarked on the podcast about ITV’s decision to cancel Gino’s shows following the accusations.

Reflecting on the nuanced views surrounding the incident, Richard observed: “You could look at it on one level and some of the papers have done and certainly a lot of the commentators have done and say, ‘Oh my God, you can’t say anything anymore, this is a huge overreaction, yada yada yada.'”

He gave his interpretation of the situation, stating, “People do not lose their job just because they said a couple of things a couple of times. It’s a pattern of behaviour, it’s upset a number of people over a number of years,” reports the Mirror.

He explained that the repetitive nature of the inappropriate behaviour inevitably led to staff speaking out. “We’ve said before on this show, if you’re in trouble as a presenter but actually your crew loves you and people who work with you go, ‘That’s just what they do and he’s a really decent guy,’ then you don’t get fired.”

He pointed out that it takes more than a single incident for action to be taken: “There has to be a whole series of things that happen, it has to go on long enough and for it to be tiresome enough – which is the word we never use.”

Earlier in the episode, Marina shared her insights into why Gino’s alleged behaviour might have been overlooked for so long. “It’s interesting that nobody confronts in that situation and there’s lots of different reasons. There’s a sort of reason that it’s just Gino being Gino and there is very much a persona that he has been encouraged to play up to.”

She also mentioned that financial considerations play a role, as the shows Gino works on are not costly productions, and addressing his behaviour could disrupt filming schedules significantly. “There are these constant value judgements being made by people. ‘How bad is it? ‘” she remarked.
