A burst water main caused flooding through the streets of Durham City.
This video shows how the burst main on Saddler Street caused water to gush through the roads onto the Market Place and Elvet Bridge. The burst sparked a huge response from Northumbrian Water as engineers worked to repair the issue.
A number of businesses, including Greggs, were also forced to close for the day as water ran through the street.
Durham County Council, which shared the video, urged residents to “bring your wellies” if they were heading into the city centre.
A spokesperson added: “Northumbrian Water told us about a major water leak on Saddler Street as a result of which we’ve closed the road between Market Place and the Magdalene Steps while work to stop the leak is carried out. Pedestrian access is still possible so you can still access all the businesses in the area – but you’d be wise to bring waterproof footwear.
“The road closure is within the city’s Controlled Parking Zone so sees limited traffic anyway but access will be maintained for emergency vehicles.”
A Northumbrian Water spokesperson said: “Our teams attended quickly and are currently on site carrying out repairs, however we expect that the road will need to be closed this morning due to flooding.
“The network has been re-zoned, but around 3,000 properties may still be seeing issues with their water supply while our teams continue to carry out repairs.”
