A cyclist who was seriously injured in a collision on the A688 in County Durham has been airlifted to hospital. The road has just reopened after being closed in both directions at New Coundon, near Bishop Auckland.
Emergency services were called just after 7.40am on Monday morning. Durham Constabulary confirmed that the road was closed in both directions shortly after, with motorists being advised stay clear of the area and look for alternative routes when possible.
A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “Police were called shortly after 7.40am today (December 23) to a collision on the A688 near Binchester Blocks involving a car and a cyclist. Colleagues from the North East Ambulance Service and Great North Air Ambulance Service also attended.
“The cyclist is believed to have suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital. The road remains closed while emergency services work at the scene.”
A statement from the North East Ambulance Service reads as follows: “We were called to reports of a road traffic incident on A688 in New Coundon at 7.41am this morning (Monday 23 December).
“We dispatched two ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, and were supported by the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). One patient was taken to James Cook University Hospital by air.”
The Great North Air Ambulance Service confirmed that both its night-time critical care team arrived by road, and a daytime critical care team joined shortly afterwards in a helicopter, with the cyclist being transported to hospital by air.
