It’s been part and parcel of many people’s trips to the Metrocentre for years and years now but the Cookery Nook is no more,. with the popular upstairs cafe now closed and boarded up, much to the shock and sadness of people who have fond memories of going there.
There is no denying that the huge Gateshead shopping mall has changed immensely since it opened in the mid-80s. The much loved Mediterranean and Antiques Villages, with an array of chain restaurants or empty units now in their place and now, another ‘relic’ of the Metrocentre has now bitten the dust; with the Nook, upstairs in the Green Mall, right next to Marks & Spencer, has now closed for business, with white boarding now surrounding it and a Google search now coming up with a ‘permanently closed’ notice.
While, Cookery Nook changed aesthetically over the years, it always maintained a real warm and welcoming vibe, with people sitting both inside and out to enjoy a cuppa before or after some retail therapy or to grab some lunch or catch up with friends mid-shop. A place popular with families, Geordie icon Cheryl was seen there with her mam on numerous occasions, with Kevin Keegan’s right hand man Terry McDermott and his wife also regulars back in the day and the fact it is no more is sure to hit hard for people in the North East who have become so used to seeing it every time they go to the Metro.
A glance at Trip Advisor suggests that the Nook hadn’t been quite as good as it used to be, with some reviewers knocking down their scores due to the disappointing service they’d received on their most recent visit and the cafe isn’t the only upper floor Green Mall business to shut down, as the very handy Post Office and newsagents right next door has now also gone, with the huge Top Man and Top Shop store that used to be open just across the way still standing empty after the world famous company folded.
