Jamie Carragher has suggested that Newcastle United might have a different plan to ‘try and stop’ Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
Newcastle go into Sunday’s Wembley showpiece fresh from a hard-fought 1-0 win against West Ham, but Eddie Howe said he had ‘difficult calls in a few positions’ after the game. Rather than sticking with an unchanged side, Carragher questioned if Howe might field Joelinton on the left or, even, switch to a back three like in the semi-final second-leg win against Arsenal after hearing the Newcastle boss’ words.
“That’s [the West Ham XI] probably the team you would expect them to play if they were playing a conventional way in terms of how Eddie Howe plays with that 4-3-3 system,” he told Sky Sports. “The fact that he said he had more decisions to make…there’s no one that screams out to me on the bench.
“Maybe [Joe] Willock, but that’s their midfield three. We all know that’s their midfield three and [Harvey] Barnes just comes in for Anthony Gordon. There’s always been a fight between those two for that position.
“The fact he’s said there are other decisions as well. I’ve actually thought before this game with my Liverpool hat on, ‘How would Newcastle go about trying to beat Liverpool with the problems they have got injury wise?’
“I’ve almost come to the conclusion that they wouldn’t play that team. They might because they won and there’s a bit of confidence, but they might have a plan for Liverpool to try and stop them.”
Liverpool have certainly been kept guessing. After facing Newcastle at Anfield last month, Arne Slot said the league leaders will ‘expect something different’ at Wembley.
