Some of the best places in the North East for a GALentines day out

We’ve all heard about Valentine’s day, for better or worse. Either it’s something that causes you stress every year as you think of what to do with the significant other, or you feel that the flowers and chocolates are all a bit much when you have no one to share them with. The accidental advent of Galentine’s day is here to help.

The holiday-alternative started over 15 years ago as a joke in the popular American comedy, Parks and Recreation. The writers led by Michael Schur, created the holiday as a way to celebrate female friendship within the realm of the show every February 13th. The point of the holiday isn’t to patronise single women, but rather to be a day of empowerment, and a reminder for women to support and uplift one another.

The Sunday Telegraph described the event of Galentine’s Day: “Just remember that Galentine’s Day was born out of rebel spirit, intended as a rebuff to the conventions of Valentine’s Day. It’s about doing exactly what you want to do, and feeling thankful for having friends that let you do it.”

But it’s out in the real world now, with bars, pubs, restaurants and businesses up and down the region down to help you celebrate. Keep reading to find out the best places you can go to celebrate with your gals in style.

Crafts

If you’re after something hands-on, there’s plenty of options to get stuck into some crafts, some with booze, some without. The River Bar just south of Washington can help you unleash your inner artist at their Sip and Paint event, hosted by the Boozy Brushes team.

You’ll get step-by-step guidance from a talented instructor, plus a glass of wine (or two) to help get the creativity flowing. Whether you’re a seasoned painter or a total beginner, this event is all about having fun and making your very own masterpiece to take home.

Each guest will get their own canvas, paint, and apron, along with a special welcome cocktail on arrival to help get the creative juices going and snacks to stimulate the brain.

If you’d rather keep your hands clean, then closer to the city centre is a Galentines-themed punch needle workshop, where you can make your own tassled heart wall hanging. All materials for creating your heart are provided in this beginner class that may even hook you on the craft itself.

Comedy & Cabaret

You may want to sit back and let the entertainment happen in front of you rather than be focused on a crafts project, to each their own. There’s a great line-up on offer all across the city.

At the world famous Stand Comedy Club, they are hosting their own Anti-Valentines Day event, with a little something for the those out there who are sick of all the hearts, flowers around the day, and invite you into their “dark basement” instead. The line-up includes a range of comedians, with a lot of female voices in there too.

Over in Ouseburn, there’s the aptly named The Girlie Show, the all-female cabaret special that regularly sells out their event each year. With a great mix of stand up and sketch comedy, as well as music, there’s something for everyone. Hosted at the local legend establishment, The Cluny.

Presented by Hendrika Seguro-Bigg, the all-female line-up helps show what Galentines can be about, power through female friendships.

Food & Drink

Something very popular with groups of friends these days is boozy brunching, and several local establishments are here to help you celebrate Galentine’s the way you want.

The Slug & Lettuce, with premises both at the Quayside and just by Central Station, offer a wide range of sharers, with many veggie or vegan alternatives on the menu too. And don’t worry, the attentive team will make sure your prosecco is topped up for the whole 90 minutes.

Turtle Bay near The Gate are extending their popular Bottomless Brunch until 9pm on the 13th, giving you the chance to spend the evening catching up and celebrating friendship. They also have their One Love Valentine’s celebration with a special set menu.

If you want to go all out, The Woodsman’s Arms are making sure Galentine’s supporters feel seen with their Bottomless Brunch offer. The deal for just under £36 per person gets you access to their range of cocktails, bubbles, draught & spirits alongside a classic Woodmans dish from their special brunch menu, with tasty added extras for another £3. Just outside Newcastle by Whickham, enjoy a quieter Galentine’s in style, you’ve earned it.
