South Shields restaurant with ‘best fish and chips ever’ has TV stars and global icons flocking

It was championed by a famous food blogger last year for serving up the ‘best fish and chips ever’ and a certain South Shields restaurant also has serious pulling power when it comes to celebrity customers. And the latest A-lister to pay a visit arrived at the weekend, in the form of Gavin and Stacey legend James Corden.

For decades and decades now, Colmans have been seen as one of the leading lights, not just in the North East, but the whole country for top notch fish and chips; with the queues outside its original venue on Ocean Road in South Shields every Good Friday and pretty much all summer, proof of its popularity and how highly it is regarded by both locals and visitors to the coast.

The business added another string to its bow in 2017, with the launch of the stunning Seafood Temple, which local celebs like Little Mix star turned solo sensation Jade Thirlwall, Chris and Rosie Ramsey and Joe McElderry are all huge fans of. It was also the place world famous political icon Hilary Clinton visited, when she gave a lecture in South Tyneside a few years ago.

And, on Saturday night James, the star and writer of smash hit BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey and world renowned talk show host, followed in Hilary’s footsteps, not just by addressing a captive audience with his own guest lecture, but also by tucking into some food at Colmans.

Delighted to welcome, staff shared photos of him at the restaurant on social media on Sunday, with one photo of him with comedian Chris, who was at the event a night earlier with wife Rosie.

Last year, Colmans got a huge seal of approval from much followed culinary enthusiast, the Food Review Club, who visited the Seafood Temple on a visit to the North East. . After posting a snapshot of his food on the Food Review Club Instagram, founder Matt returned to his Insta story to let his followers know that he’d been at Colmans, adding that the food was 10/10 and the fish and chips were ‘comfortably’ his ‘favourite in the UK.’

He added: “We went there last night and had the full dining experience – IN-CRED-IBLE! Outstanding. These guys are icons of the fish and chip world.”
