Spain warning as tourism crackdown hits popular seaside resort with bars shut early

A favourite holiday destination for many Brits, has introduced stringent anti-tourism measures that will see bars, restaurants and nightclubs closing early. The decision comes after local residents in the Alicante’s Old Town and Calle Castaño area voiced complaints about noise levels.

These areas are now classified as Acoustically Saturated Zones (ZAS). In addition to earlier closing times, outdoor seating areas will be reduced by half, disappointing tourists who enjoy dining and drinking al fresco.

Furthermore, no new applications for terrace spaces will be accepted. Alicante City Council approved these measures on Tuesday, February 11, with implementation expected as early as late March, just before the summer season kicks off, according to The Olive Press.

The ZAS designation also halts the issuance of new licences for nightclubs, bars, restaurants, cafes, karaoke bars and bingo halls. Under the new rules, hospitality venues, excluding nightclubs, will close at 1am on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday evenings.

Nightclubs will have to shut their doors and switch off the music at 3am. For the rest of the week, the closing time is set at 12.30am, or 1am for clubs.

Venues with terraces must ensure they are cleared half an hour before closing. These changes could significantly impact the lively nightlife that draws millions of tourists to Alicante each year to enjoy its Mediterranean climate and vibrant atmosphere.

During the festive period of Christmas/New Year and the Bonfires celebrations, extended opening hours will be in effect, with the council set to announce the specific timings closer to the date. 24-hour shops within these two zones will no longer operate round-the-clock, instead closing between 12.30am and 7am.

Businesses selling bakery items, takeaway food, newspapers or beverages will also be subject to these restrictions. To enforce compliance, the local police will conduct a special operation to ensure adherence to closing times and the clearing of bar terraces.
