Step inside Heaton’s new cocktail hotspot as vape shop becomes chic Chilly Road bar

There’s a new ‘must try’ cocktail haunt in Heaton, now that an award-winning Newcastle favourite has made the switch to Chillingham Road, to open its third bar in the area.

Chances are if you love a cocktail and you’ve been in Newcastle in the last few years, chances are you’ve been in Mother Mercy at least once, with a lot of curiosity surrounding the bar when it took over the premises previously occupied by The Cellar Bar, underneath The Old George in the city centre.

Mother Mercy had an immediate impact on the nightlife scene, with it quickly gaining a fine reputation for producing top tier drinks, with its table service only policy giving it a real high end and speakeasy feel to it. Since its launch, Mother Mercy, as well as expanding to Fenwick and Sheepfold Stables in Sunderland, has been recognised on both a local and national scale, with it winning Best Bar at the Newcastle Loves awards in 2022 and then being named as one of the top 50 places for cocktails in the UK last year.

And now there is a brand new Mother Mercy to check out, with the opening of a new branch in the bustling Chilly Road area in Heaton. Home to plenty of food and drink businesses, including the much loved Butterfly Cabinet, highly rated Nest and Rebel and the recently opened Eatflix 5D cinema, which attracted NUFC players to its launch.

Mother Mercy Heaton had its official launch this week, with the new bar’s stunning interior will seamlessly blend Heaton’s vibrant local personality with Mother Mercy’s signature style, which has been designed in collaboration with the talented team at AND+ Studios. The design features playful pops of colour, bespoke furniture, and warm wooden tones, reflecting Heaton’s creative community while staying true to Mother Mercy’s understated elegance. AND+ Studios has worked closely with the Mother Mercy team to create a space that is both functional and welcoming, highlighting their commitment to designing spaces with heart and purpose.

Commenting on the opening, co-founder Neil Donachie said: “This is a really exciting new chapter for us at Mother Mercy. We’ve always loved creating spaces where people can connect over incredible cocktails, and Heaton feels like the perfect place to serve our cocktails, while staying true to the essence of Mother Mercy. We’re looking forward to becoming part of the Heaton community and sharing our creativity with the neighbourhood.”
