Storm Eowyn LIVE: North East updates as ‘severe’ weather set to hit the region

Storm Eowyn is on its way to the UK, sparking a series of severe weather warnings across the country including the North East with strong winds, heavy rain and snow set to hit on Friday.

An Amber warning is set to come into force for the whole North East region from 6am until 9pm on Friday, January 24, with gusts of up to 90mph expected as the storm arrives. Forecasters have said that it anticipates travel conditions will be “severely disrupted” in the coming days, with longer journey times and cancellations likely by road, rail, air and ferry.

Rail passengers have been advised not to travel in the severe weather, with LNER confirming that no trains will be operating north of Newcastle in either direction from 11am on Friday. Driving conditions are also expected to be significantly impacted, with some roads and bridges likely to close in the high winds.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has upgraded weather warnings elsewhere in the UK, with a rare red alerts having been put in place for southern Scotland, including Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as much of the area close to the Northumberland border, from 10am until 5pm on Friday, with forecasters saying that Eowyn will cause “very dangerous” conditions and significant disruption in the area. A second red warning also covers the entirety of Northern Ireland from 7am until 2pm on Friday.

Latest weather maps from the Met Office show that wind gusts will pick up sharply across the North East in the early hours of Friday morning, quickly exceeding 50mph in most parts of the region by 6am. Gales will continue to strengthen throughout the morning, with the strongest winds forecast to hit by midday.
