The January transfer window saw Sunderland add to their squad as they look to close the gap on the top two promotion places between now and the end of the season.
The Black Cats currently sit in fourth place in the table, having drawn three of their last five games in the league. Their last outing saw them rescue a point against Watford, thanks to Dennis Cirkin’s 89th minute equaliser to make it 2-2.
They currently sit in fourth pace in the Championship table, five points adrift of Sheffield United in second place, and seven behind leaders Leeds United. Regis Le Bris will hope that the January business will make the difference in them closing the gap and earning automatic promotion to the Premier League.
The winter window saw Sunderland complete the permanent signings of striker Wilson Isidor. As well as loan deals for Liverpool’s Jayden Danns and Roma midfielder Enzo Le Fee.
The business comes as league leaders Leeds failed to make any additions to their squad. Second places Sheffield United added seven new players to their squad, while third placed Burnley made five new signings, including a loan deal for Sporting winger Marcus Edwards.
January deals are bound to have had an impact on the value of squads in the Championship. On paper, the higher the squad value, the easier it should be for a team – things don’t work out like that in football though.
According to transfermarkt, Sunderland have the third most valuable squad in the Championship, with a total value of £104 million. That is however over £40 million short of Leeds United’s squad, with Burnley leading the way in terms of squad value.
