Popular eateries across Sunderland are planning special menus in readiness for the return of a week-long treat for diners.
A spread of venues, including the city’s My Delhi; Acropolis at STACK Seaburn and Sheepfolds Stables at Riverside, will be taking part in Sunderland Restaurant Week when it makes its return in March. The first instalment of the twice-yearly event will get under way on March 15 with a range of £10, £15 and £20 food deals on offer until March 23.
Its organiser Sunderland BID has teamed up this time with Sunderland City Council and together they are encouraging Restaurant Week regulars and newcomers to make a real meal of things by downloading the Sunderland City app for ideas to add to their outing. They suggest that as well as taking advantage of a cut-price meal out, diners could also factor in a cocktail catch-up with friends first or arrange a family trip out around it.
BID chief executive Sharon Appleby said: “This is a real opportunity for people to use the week to make an occasion of dining out at a price that won’t break the bank.” She added: “Sunderland has seen huge growth in the number of places we now have to eat and drink.
“That, coupled with the sheer variety of cuisines on offer, is undoubtedly why Sunderland Restaurant Week is so popular.” Like the long-running Newcastle Restaurant Week which took place again in January, and Durham Restaurant Week which just ended a run earlier this month, the Sunderland event is out to boost the hospitality trade while inviting foodies to cash in on savings at their favourite restaurants but also to take the opportunity to try somewhere new without breaking the bank.
Also among the restaurants and cafes involved this time around are Soju and Goji; Angelo’s; Asiana; Spent Grain; Rumour Has It; The Engine Room; The Botanist; Enfes; Koji, Nobody; Mexico 70; Wendy’s Place and Esquires. And more are set to add to the mix.
Outlets at Sheepfold Stables, the £4m food, drink and entertainment hub which opened last summer near the Stadium of Light, are also supporting the week, with Vito’s Osteria; Scream for Pizza and Deep North accepting the discount vouchers. And food businesses on the north side of the river – including House of Zen; Marina Vista; Yard Nine; These Things Happen; Goa; The Mad Hatter; Tarantino’s and Grand Hotel – are fully on board too.
Coun Beth Jones called the event “a brilliant opportunity to explore new dining spots, grab a great deal and show support for our incredible local food and drink businesses”. Those wanting to take advantage of the upcoming offers can download discount vouchers for their chosen restaurants from the Sunderland Restaurant Week website here.
