There is a club in England’s most northerly town that, while once rated as one of the country’s ‘most tragic’ is a place everyone needs to experience at least once. And that place is Berwick institution Bedrocks.
Situated minutes away from the Scottish Border in north Northumberland, Berwick-upon-Tweed is half way between Newcastle and Edinburgh, meaning that when it comes to nights out or day sessions, it is often bypassed in favour of one of the cities. But one venue that simply cannot be overlooked is Bedrocks. Belinda Carlisle famously sang that ‘heaven is a place on earth’; well if you like your night clubs to look exactly the way they did when they first opened their doors decades earlier, want some cheap drinks, want to bump into people of all ages dancing their cares away or even fancy a free bag of crisps when you’re taking a break from the dancefloor, well Bedrocks might just be that heavenly place that Belinda is on about.
A staple of any night out in Berwick for years and years now, often after drinks in the likes of The Leaping Salmon, Brown Bear or The Battery, Bedrocks has stood the test of time and seen some of its neighbours come and go, while still going strong. Wander up its rather tricky to negotiate stairs to pay your way in and you’re soon transported to a magical land that is very much at odds with the rest of Berwick and the overall feel of the town.
Berwick is a place steeped in history, where its natives are likely to tell you they’re neither English or Scottish, they’re Berwickers and very proud ones of that. Chances are if you’re in Bedrocks, affectionately known as ‘Sox’ on a Saturday night, you’ll see young farmers mixing it the staff from Asda on a work night, see Nigel from accounts giving it serious air guitar, or see one of your mum or dad’s mates in a completely different light after you’ve seen them pull some killer dance moves out the locker.
As well as its Fred Flinstone theme decor on the toilet doors, Bedrocks, branded ‘world class’ by one Trip Advisor reviewer, like any other self respecting iconic nightclubs, has a branded and very 80s style carpet and has quite possibly the most unique club seating ever. Forget crushed velvet couches and ice buckets; in Berwick you can have a gossip with your mates or test out your best chap up lines while sitting in a church pew!
There is no way that Bedrocks, famous for a sign telling people they’ve been ‘banned for life’ if they dare have a scrap on the premises, should ever have been included on The Tab’s most tragic clubs in the UK list back in 2017. Yes it be be accused of being a bit dated, but only a total nightlife snob could go to Bedrocks and not have a good time.
A Northumberland treasure that everyone has to visit. Go with an open mind and your dancing shoes on and we promise you, you’ll have a ball.
