The plush Newcastle roof terrace that makes you feel ‘like you’re in Marbella’ on a sunny day

It might be a bit of a stretch to say that you can feel like you’re in one of Spain’s most famous resorts while you’re actually sat slap bang in the middle of Newcastle; but if you’re lucky enough to get a seat one of the most in demand roof terraces in town you can get serious Marbella vibes…as long as the weather plays ball.

In Newcastle city centre alone, never mind the wider area, there are plenty of ‘hidden’ beer gardens and terraces and, when it comes to the best of the best, the one on top of Bar Luga has to be up there with the cream of the crop. Accessed either by going up the stairs in the main bar, or via a separate stair case in the back corner, the Bar Luga terrace is stylish, sophisticated and, when the weather is hot, totally sun-drenched.

The whole aesthetic of the luxurious space gives off nights by the port in Marbs, or sat having a bite to eat and a few cocktails on the roof of some high end hotel. Up until the Covid pandemic, the Bar Luga terrace was something of a ‘best kept secret,’ however, when things slowly opened up again after lockdown and people were desperate to meet up with their friends at a social distance, it quickly became inundated with bookings, as outdoor spaces thrived in tough times.

The same happened once the second lockdown at the start of 2021 ended and Brits were allowed to go out for food and drink outside in small groups; with anyone wanting to get a table on Bar Luga roof really lucky to get one, as demand soared again. While there are outdoor heaters (which can get very warm!) and blankets often available should they be required, it’s when the sun is out and there’s not a cloud in the sky that the terrace really comes into its own.

It is THE perfect place to forget about everything else you’ve got going; share a bottle of wine with a mate, enjoy a slap up meal, pose up a storm in your shades and get some photos to make your Instagram followers jealous! If a holiday to Marbella is a bit out of your budget for this spring/summer, get a table booked on Bar Luga terrace – just maybe check the weather forecast first!

And, sticking with an international flavour, this week a Northumberland village was likened to Paris, while a beach in South Shields has been branded ‘just like Ibiza’ in the summer and an outdoor pool in Northumberland which ‘feels like Spain’ on a hot day, is getting ready to re-open for 2025.
