The real-life house-hunting frenzy behind Netflix’s new dark comedy No Good Deed

Netflix’s newest dark comedy, No Good Deed, was born out of its writer’s frantic house hunt during the COVID-19 pandemic. The show stars sitcom legends Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano as Lydia and Paul Morgan, a couple who put their chic Los Angeles home up for sale.

Their Spanish-style property quickly becomes a hot commodity among families, hoping it will solve their problems. However, they’re unaware that the house hides some dark secrets that the Morgans have yet to confront.

The eight-part dramedy comes from the creative mind behind Dead To Me, Liz Feldman. The 47-year-old first shared the real-life experience that inspired the show in 2022.

In an announcement about the production of No Good Deed, Feldman said: “No Good Deed was inspired by my many late nights during the early pandemic maniacally searching Zillow listings for a way out of my house.”

She added, “I’m endlessly grateful to Netflix for being such a supportive, creative home and for continuing to allow me to turn my crippling anxiety into entertainment,” reports the Mirror.

Two years after Netflix picked up the series, Feldman has shared more about her “maniac” house search. She revealed to Tudum: “This show was inspired by me actually looking for a house. I saw over 50 houses, and I realised there are so many secrets in the buying and selling of a house. And so I wanted to explore that.”

The drama, led by a household name in Hollywood comedy, delves into some seriously dark content, including blackmail, murder, and violence. According to creator Feldman in their talk with Tudum: “Lisa is one of the most wholly unique, surprising, and subversively dark comedians on the planet.”

They also shared their anticipation, saying, “I felt so excited to be able to work with her in a capacity where she gets to really go deep as Lydia.”

The impressive cast features talents such as Linda Cardellini from ‘Dead to Me’, Luke Wilson known for his role in ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’, Teyonah Parris from the upcoming ‘They Cloned Tyrone’, and O-T Fagbenle, recognised for ‘Maxxx’.

Plus, it reunites Feldman with Silver Tree, the collaboration that brought us ‘No Good Deed’, who now takes a dual role as executive producer and director for several episodes.
