The Sunderland coastal town that became a thriving and popular destination for locals and visitors

The regeneration of a Sunderland coastal town has seen it become a thriving and popular destination for both locals and tourists.

Seaburn recently made the top 30 best UK beaches according to TripAdvisor – beating the likes of Bamburgh to be the only North East location in the list. Reviewers left plenty of five star reviews, praising the stunning coastline and the improvements made in the area.

In recent years millions of pounds have been spent reviving the area, with the Seaburn Inn, STACK Seaburn and the Tram Shelter highlighted as key projects which have boosted the area.

Since opening in 2020, STACK has become a key part of the town’s tourism offering and economy. The regeneration of the seafront has helped boost visitor numbers, attract millions of pounds in private investment and create hundreds of jobs.

The investment has helped turn the seafront into a trendy drinking and dining destination. Visitors and locals will have seen a variety of new bars, restaurants and a hotel pop up.

Councillor Kevin Johnston, Housing, Regeneration and Business Portfolio Holder, said: “Seaburn continues to undergo regeneration as part of the Seafront Regeneration Plan, to transform the area into a key cultural and tourism destination for Sunderland. In recent years, we have made significant strides in enhancing our city’s seafront at Seaburn and Roker.

“We have invested more than £15m in seafront infrastructure, public spaces, and facilities, delivering key developments. This includes upgraded cycle routes, promenade improvements, new public toilets and the conversation of historic buildings into new café and restaurant spaces.”

Coun Johnston said the opening of the children’s play park in Seaburn in October 2024 has further enriched its family-friendly offer.

He added: “Regeneration efforts have also attracted substantial private sector investment, with the arrival of thriving businesses, including The Seaburn Inn, Stack Seaburn, and the Tram Shelter.

“These developments have all helped make the seafront a more popular destination for residents and for regional, national and international visitors. Looking ahead, Sunderland BID is progressing through a ballot process to establish a dedicated Seafront BID, further strengthening support for businesses in both Roker and Seaburn.

“Seaburn and Roker have evolved into vibrant, well-connected leisure destinations set within an award-winning public realm. They align with the city’s low-carbon, social, and economic growth ambitions and solidify Sunderland’s position as a premier coastal destination.”
