Tributes to cyclist dad who died in County Durham collision two days before Christmas

Tributes have been paid to a father who died just two days before Christmas while out on his bike.

Cyclist Anthony Brian Milburn died on Monday, December 23, following a road traffic collision with a BMW car on the A688 near Binchester Services. The 34-year-old was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, but despite the best efforts of medics, he died as a result of his injuries.

Anthony’s partner, Kirstan Helliwell, paid tribute to her fiancé, saying that he was “gone just as life was at its best”. Kirstan said: “My gorgeous boy, words cannot describe the heartache I feel right now.

“You are my best friend, my fiance, dad to Cameron and three other boys and a step daughter, loving son, and brother to his siblings, uncle and special friend to those closest to him.

“You will be forever in our hearts. I love you and will forever be your rock”.

Anthony’s sister Tricia added: “He was the best big brother and there when I needed him. He was one in a million.”

Durham Constabulary are investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision, which happened shortly after 7.40am on Monday, December 23. Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision, or has dashcam footage of the car or cyclist prior to the incident.

The force encouraged anyone with information to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit by emailing sciu@durham.police.uk, or calling 101, quoting incident number 56 of December 23.
