Upset as coastal café and popular brunch spot with stunning sea views confirms closure

Customers at a much loved coastal cafe and brunch spot, that offers stunning sea views, have been quick to express their upset after its owner confirmed that it will close at the end of the year.

On a prime position, just up from the beach in Seaham, Flamingo Café, opened up six years ago and quickly attracted a lot of attention, thanks to its highly Instagrammable interior and eclectic menu, as people headed with friends and family for a bite to eat or take a break after a beach walk.

Like every other business in the hospitality sector, Flamingo was hit hard by the Covid pandemic, as bars and restaurants were forced to make big changes in order to survive. But now, after riding that storm, owner Hannah Jackson-Harrison took to the cafe’s Facebook page on Thursday evening, to break the sad news she had decided to shut down.

The post began: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the closure of Flamingo cafe at the end of this month. Our last trading day will be Sunday 29th December and I hope you can all make it in for some final visits between now and then!”

I turned what was once an unused store room, into the Flamingo Cafe 6 years ago with my son’s Dad. I could never have imagined for it to have taken me the places it has. It’s allowed me to meet so many amazing souls along the way and I’m lucky to call some of them friends forever. I’ve had some fantastic staff over the years and I will be forever grateful to them as they were the building blocks that helped to make Flamingo what it is today. “

Hannah continued: “Over the last 6 years I have had so many highs (and lows!) but the past year has been tough with a combination of parking charges being introduced along with a crap summer (did we even have one?!). I will forever remember this amazing chapter in my life and what it’s brought me. But for now, it’s time to close the doors and say goodbye.

“I hope that I get to see you all at least one last time before the 30th. Don’t hug me – I’ll cry! THANK YOU for supporting a small, independent business for so long. It’s been a wild ride.”

Customers were quick to express their sadness in the comments thread, with one replying: “Sorry to hear this you had created a great place to visit. Will be missed” and another posting: “What a shame. This is one of the best healthy, nutritious eateries in the area. I wish there was more places like this. We absolutely loved the food”
