As far as Valentine’s Day treats go, a late-night wander around a historic city landmark would certainly make a change from an over-priced meal and a bunch of flowers.
And something different is always what’s on offer at Newcastle Castle which this time will be laying on an exclusive tour of its ancient grade 1-listed Keep which, besides being dark and atmospheric, also has a reputation for being haunted. But love, rather than spirits, will be in the air there on February 14 during what it says will be a ‘magical’ experience.
The tour, taking place after the castle doors close for the night, will be accompanied by a guide who will regale visitors with stories of the castle’s inhabitants in far-off times. It says the group then “will head into the romantic Great Hall for a glass of sparkling wine and a sweet treat whilst cello music is performed”.
And after soaking up the atmosphere of that, the visitors then will climb the steps up to the roof – and it is quite some climb – to take in the Keep’s stunning views from the top of the great tower which looks out over the Newcastle skyline. The tour is the latest in a series of events at Newcastle Castle which, besides tours, include talks, films and music nights.
Tickets for the Valentine’s tour evening, which will start at 6pm, are £15 plus fees: book here. Also coming up there will be a special St George’s Day tour taking place on the evening of April 23. For the full events programme keep an eye out here.
