Napoli director Giovanni Manna has revealed that Victor Osimhen has a release clause in his contract and the club are “working to find a solution” to sanction his permanent departure.
Newcastle United scouted Osimhen at Lille before his £57.8million plus add-ons move to Napoli in July 2020. They have continued to keep an eye on his situation and there was an expectation that Osimhen would leave Naples last summer after he handed in a transfer request and Antonio Conte was appointed as their new head coach.
However, instead of departing Napoli for good, Osimhen joined Galatasaray remainder of the season. Since his move to Istanbul, the 26-year-old has scored 20 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions.
Although Galatasaray are not expected to sign Osimhen on a permanent deal, he is still anticipated to leave Napoli this summer. A move to the Premier League is looking more prominent after a failed move to Chelsea last summer and with Newcastle expected to spend big in the summer, the Magpies could take advantage of Osimhen’s situation at Napoli and bolster their forward line.
Providing an update on Osimhen’s situation at Napoli, Manna revealed the Serie A club are working to sort out a resolution for the forward to ensure there is no repeat of last year’s transfer fiasco.
“Victor is always going to be a hotly-debated topic and not just on the transfer market,” Manna told Sky Sport Italia. “He is an appetising player for clubs, he has a clause and everyone knows this, we are working to find a solution as quickly as possible, so that we can avoid what happened last year.”
Osimhen might be an attractive proposition for Newcastle. With Callum Wilson out of contract in the summer, the Magpies are going to need another striker to compete with Alexander Isak and Osimhen could be the perfect fit.
But Napoli would no doubt need to lower their asking price with Osimhen’s release clause at £90million with the Toon all too wary of needing to comply with PSR. Osimhen has been one of Europe’s sharpshooters over the last half a decade, with the 2022/23 season still his most prolific after he scored 31 goals in 39 matches when Napoli won the Serie A title.
