As the weather warms up and trips to the beach are firmly back on the cards, North East visitors and residents might be tempted to take a dip in the sea.
However, with Northumbrian Water under fire after raw sewage was discharged from its storm overflows for 280,029 hours in 2023, from a total of 46,492 spills, some may not feel confident about going into the water.
Data from the environment agency reveals that the majority of bathing waters off the North East coast are considered excellent. However, there are a handful of beaches which get two stars from three, meaning good; and one which gets just one star, with its water quality deemed sufficient.
One beach in North Tyneside was given a poor classification in 2023, with bathing not advised. Check out the Environment Agency ratings for all of the bathing beaches in the North East.
