Bruno Guimaraes has revealed that he received a text from Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer hours before their Carabao Cup triumph.
Newcastle claimed a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored the goals that saw the Magpies win their first major domestic trophy in 70 years.
Shearer was one of several famous faces in the stands at Wembley to watch Newcastle win the Carabao Cup, with TV duo Ant & Dec also in attendance. After the final whistle, Guimaraes gave an emotional interview with Sky Sports, where he expressed his delight and making history with Newcastle.
Guimaraes went on to reveal that he received a text message from Shearer before Newcastle beat Liverpool at Wembley. The Brazilian admitted to being overwhelmed with emotion after etching his name into the club’s history.
“This is my second home, since when I signed for the club, from the relegation (battle), Champions League and now [Carabao Cup] champions.
“I think we are making history. Someday, when I leave this club, I want the fans to sign my name the way they do to [Alan] Shearer today.
“I know we have seen him in the stands today, he [Shearer] text me before the game. I am so emotional today.”
Guimaraes was joined by Kieran Trippier in lifting the Carabao Cup in the stands at Wembley. Newcastle will enjoy the celebrations over the March international break before returning to Premier League action next month, where they will face Brentford on April 2 at St James’ Park.
