Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has revealed that he was always going down the middle for his penalty against Nottingham Forest in the crucial win.
Isak was on the scoresheet twice within one minute during a first half rout against Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. The first, to make the scoreline 3-1 came from the penalty spot, with Isak’s chip having too much power for Matz Sels, who did get a hand to the ball.
Replays showed that the Forest goalkeeper appeared to be off his line when the penalty was taken, meaning that the spot kick may have been retaken if he had saved it. But the goalkeeper instead ended up in the net along with the ball.
Isak beat him again just one minute later to make the scoreline 4-1, with what would turn out to be the winning goal after a second-half comeback by Forest. Speaking after the game, Isak talked through his penalty.
“I already made my mind up that I was going to go down the middle,” he told Sky Sports. “I felt like the goalie waited pretty long, I’m not sure if he came off his line or not but every goal counts so it doesn’t matter.”
Isak also made an honest admission about Newcastle‘s second half performance, with two Forest goals making it a nervy finish in stoppage time.
“It was a brilliant first half, obviously I felt we started the game good but we conceded,” he said. “The reaction was really good after that and we managed to score all four and then we dropped a bit second half, conceded sloppy goals which we have to work on, but obviously happy to win the game.”
The win moves Eddie Howe’s side up to fifth in the Premier League table, just three points behind their opponents in third place. Newcastle are back in action on Wednesday night when they take on Liverpool at Anfield in the 8.15pm kick-off.
