Magpies’ supporters have had to endure 70-years of hurt waiting to win a domestic trophy with a resolute display at Wembley Stadium against Liverpool.
Dan Burn and Alexander Isak wrote their name into the Tyneside history books, becoming the first Newcastle players to score at the home of English football since Rob Lee in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea in 2000.
Eddie Howe’s team were the better side throughout the contest but had to survive a late scare when Federico Chiesa halved the deficit in injury time. In truth, this time felt different.
Far away from the ‘We’re back’ Wembley final in 2023 against Manchester United, this felt more like business rather than pleasure and it certainly panned out that way. The Magpies went about their business in a professional manner and the final whistle brought pandemonium in the stands and on the pitch.
But it was a moment before kick-off that paved the way for Newcastle’s triumph. Speaking ahead of kick-off, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister admitted the Reds knew how much a win would be for the Magpies, hinting at a psychological advantage before the match was even underway.
Speaking to Sky before the game, Mac Allister said: “Well I think it is all about duels. They have really good players and strong players so the challenges will be there and we expect them to be really aggressive.
“We know that for them it is a huge opportunity to win something after a long time so hopefully it is a nice game for everyone.”
It was a huge opportunity and Newcastle United delivered.
