Newcastle United have been guaranteed European football following their 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. The Magpies stormed past Arne Slot’s side at Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening, lifting their first trophy since 1969.
Dan Burn broke the deadlock shortly before half-time with a brilliant header before Alexander Isak doubled Newcastle’s lead just after the break. Federico Chiesa pulled one back in the dying embers of stoppage time, but the Reds couldn’t find an equaliser.

How to qualify for the Champions League?
The top four teams in the Premier League qualify for the league phase of the Champions League. The fifth-placed team could also get a spot in the competition, depending on the collective success of their domestic rivals in Europe this season.
How to qualify for the Europa League?
Two Europa League places are given to Premier League clubs if they either finish fifth (or sixth, if the top five clubs qualify for the Champions League) or win the FA Cup. Last season, Manchester United won the FA Cup; they took Chelsea’s Europa League spot, leaving the Blues with a place in the Conference League and Newcastle empty-handed.

The winners of the Carabao Cup – in this case, Newcastle – qualify for the playoff stage of the Conference League.
When do these qualifications change?
If the FA Cup winners qualify for the Champions League via their Premier League position, or by winning the Champions League, their Europa League spot will go to the next-highest ranked team in the Premier League who have not already qualified for Europe.
If the Carabao Cup winners – in this case, Newcastle – qualify for the Champions League or Europa League via their Premier League position (or by winning either of those European competitions – which the Magpies cannot do) their Conference League playoff place will go to the next-highest ranked team in the Premier League who have not already qualified for Europe.
What does the Newcastle victory mean?
Newcastle United have banked a Conference League spot after defeating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. The Magpies will, of course, be hoping to qualify for the Champions League or Europa League via the Premier League.
If Howe’s side were to do so, their place in the Conference League would be passed down to the next-highest ranked team in the Premier League that has not already qualified for a UEFA competition. That team could finish as low as 11th.
