What Oliver Glasner said about Crystal Palace defence gives Newcastle boost for midweek clash

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner insisted his side will learn the lessons from their capitulation to Manchester City – with Newcastle United up next for the Eagles.

Palace boast an impressive away record this season, had had conceded only once away from Selhurst Park in the Premier League in 2025 before their 5-2 defeat to City on Saturday lunchtime. The visitors roared into a two-goal lead with goals from Eberechi Eze and Chris Richards inside the opening 21 minutes. In fact Eze thought he had made it 3-0 before his effort was ruled out for offside, while Ismaila Sarr missed a good opportunity.

However, City then took control, with Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick followed by a quickfire equaliser from Omar Marmoush. Second-half goals from Mateo Kovacic before James McAtee and Nico O’Reilly completed the scoring.

Glasner was disappointed that his team were unable to press home their advantage after taking early control, but admitted his defence – without the suspended Marc Guehi – made too many mistakes. The England defender will be back for the game at St James’ Park on Wednesday.

“It’s disappointing, especially when you have the lead by two goals.” he said. “It was a great start and we had a third disallowed and a big chance for Ismaila (Sarr). But our defence was not good enough and made too many mistakes. Then when you give a team like City so many chances they just score. We have to learn and I think we will.”

The sides could come face to face again in the FA Cup final, with Palace facing Aston Villa and Man City taking on Nottingham Forest later this month.

Glasner said: “I said to Pep afterwards if we meet again you can’t play in this system because we will solve it!”
