Newcastle United supporters watching the League Cup final on TV won’t see club hero Alan Shearer working on any of the coverage from Wembley Stadium.
ITV and Sky Sport are both broadcasting the match, but neither will have Shearer on as a pundit. However, that’s not to say he won’t be at the game to see how his boyhood club does against Liverpool.
Shearer confirmed days after the semi-final win over Arsenal that he would be at the final and he’s purposely not working at the match. He explained his reasoning on The Rest is Football podcast.
“I’ll be going to the final,” Shearer replied when asked by Micah Richards. “I’ve had to politely decline two or three requests to work on the final; I’m going as a fan.
“I can’t not be at Wembley – and I know it’s an if – if Newcastle wins a cup! A first domestic one in 70 years – if we win it, I have to be a fan. I’ve got to be there as a fan. I’m not working.”
Shearer also attended the 2023 final against Manchester United as a supporter. Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle beforehand, he said: “I’m going there with friends and family; it’s going to be a good day – if we win!
“I’m there as a fan on Sunday, that drive up to Wembley Way when you can see the Newcastle fans – it’s the only time I wish I could put my boots back on. I’m one of them – and I appreciate what they’re about and what they’ve been through.”
He also said, two years ago: “I would gladly finish mid-table if it meant Newcastle won a trophy. It’s been far too long. I want and need Newcastle to win a trophy in my lifetime.”
