Wolves forward Matheus Cunha may be subject to a Football Association probe after an incident with an Ipswich staff member post their 2-1 loss at Molineux. In the dying moments of the game, Jack Taylor netted for Ipswich, exacerbating the woes for Gary O’Neil’s team who are stuck in the relegation zone, trailing safety by four points.
The match’s end was marred by tensions, leading to Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri being shown red and held back by teammate Craig Dawson, while Cunha was also caught up in an on-pitch scuffle.
Cunha was captured on social media footage colliding with an Ipswich security staff member and seemingly grabbing his glasses off his face after the match concluded. The Mirror have been informed that the FA is awaiting referee Simon Hooper’s report to decide on launching an inquiry.
Ex-Premier League referee Mike Dean expressed his views to Sky Sports, suggesting Cunha might face repercussions. “Going back to the suspension. Cunha, the biggest player that they’ve got. I’ve watched the footage back afterwards,” said Dean.
“He elbows the back of the head of one of the Ipswich coaches. Then he pulls his glasses off and throws them to the pitch. For me, I think he’ll be in trouble with the FA.”, reports the Mirror.
Following the match, O’Neil addressed the incident involving Ait-Nouri, who was handed a second yellow card and will consequently miss the upcoming match against Leicester City. In his post-match comments, O’Neil stated: “I haven’t seen it. I have just been told he received a second yellow. I spoke to him during the game. We are under a lot of pressure. We are trying to push the group beyond our level and you can’t get yourself in trouble. We are stretched as it is. We need Rayan and now we don’t have him. I will deal with that internally.”
“I understand the players being emotional but we have to keep control better. For two players not to be in the right place for a corner, at home to Ipswich, in the last seconds, shows they are not able to think clearly enough in those moments.”
Newcastle United host Wolves at St James’ Park on Wednesday, January 15 in the first Premier League at St James’ Park of 2025.
