Newcastle United have gone from strength-to-strength since the takeover of the club in October 2021.
The Saudi Arabia-backed Public Investment Fund (PIF) completed takeover of the club from previous owner Mike Ashley for a fee of around £300 million. Since then, Newcastle have secured safety in the Premier League, played Champions League football and are preparing for their second Carabao Cup final.
The club have aims of again playing Champions League football next season. They currently sit in eighth place, but have the opportunity to climb into the top five positions with a win over Nottingham Forest this afternoon (Sunday).
The takeover saw PIF become by far the richest owners of a club in worldwide football. However, spending on players and transfers has been curtailed by the Premier League and European financial rules.
Manager Eddie Howe was unable to add to his squad in the January transfer window due to the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which allows clubs to make no more than a £105 million loss over a three year rolling period. Some factors, such as spending on infrastructure and the women’s team are however taken into account.
It is estimated that PIF have assets of over £470 billion. As well as Newcastle they also own four clubs in Saudi Arabia – Al Nassr, Al Hilal, Al Ittihad and Al Ahli.
