‘You can’t’ – Newcastle handed new Jhon Duran red card referee verdict after Aston Villa chaos

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenberg believes Anthony Taylor made the right decision to send Jhon Duran off in Thursday’s clash between Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

Villa were reduced to ten men shortly after the half-hour mark at St James’ Park when top-scorer Duran was involved in an off-the-ball scuffle with Fabian Schar.

Referee Taylor gave the 21-year-old Colombia international his marching orders after he caught Schar on the back with his studs after the defender had snuffed out a counter-attack.

Villa and, in particular, Duran were incensed by Taylor’s decision to award a red card. However, Clattenberg believes the call by Taylor was the correct one, as he insisted Duran “endangered the safety” of Schar with his actions.

Speaking on Amazon Prime, Clattenberg said: “Anthony Taylor’s in a really good position. At first, it looks like he slips into the challenge, but it’s that second movement of that foot – as he puts his foot down towards the defender’s head – and that’s what Anthony Taylor sees. And it’s that second movement that deserves the red card.

“You can’t do this. You can put a player down, put his foot down but not that second movement towards the player’s head. And he certainly endangered the safety of his opponent, so correct red card.”

Meanwhile, former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given agreed with Clattenberg, adding: “I think Schar does a brilliant tackle but I think when doing the tackle, he leaves a bit on him. And I think Duran reacts to that and really racks his studs down the back of Schar’s back.”
